Indications and Usage
Deferasirox is FDA approved to remove excess iron that is in the body because of blood transfusions. Deferasirox works by attaching to iron molecules in the body so they can be excreted (removed from the body) in feces.
Deferasirox is indicated for the treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions in patients 2 years of age and older. This indication is approved under accelerated approval based on a reduction of liver iron concentrations and serum ferritin levels. Continued approval for this indication may be contingent upon verification and description of clinical benefit in confirmatory trials.
Side effects needing medical attention
Hearing loss; vision problems; decrease in urination; fever; unusual bleeding or bruising; lack of energy; loss of appetite; pain in the upper right part of the stomach; yellowing of the skin or eyes; hives; rash; difficulty breathing or swallowing; swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet or ankles. Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, skin rashes, and increases in serum creatinine
