Description
It has been 60 years since the discovery of a chromosomal abnormality in CML; the so-called Philadelphia chromosome. Since then genomics has revolutionized cancer care and the impact in hematologic malignancies is plentiful. Oncology nurses must understand the science to be able to apply in practice and communicate complex information to patients and caregivers. This session will provide an overview of foundational genomic concepts and how genomics is applied across the care continuum for hematologic cancers. Case studies examining the application of testing to “real life” situations will be presented and resources for patients will be shared.
Target Audience
Nurses involved in the care of patients with hematologic malignancies.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Discuss foundational genomic concepts (DNA, gene, chromosome, somatic and germline genomic variants)
- Discuss and define biomarkers and biomarker testing
- Identify appropriate biomarker (genomic) testing for hematologic cancers across the care continuum (diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, disease monitoring)
- Describe the role of the nurse, APRN, and others on the healthcare team in preparing patients and caregivers for biomarker testing, including access and financial implications
- Identify resources to educate and support patients and caregivers regarding biomarker testing
