Dr. Chen is investigating the relationship of chromosome 21 gain and Down syndrome-associated leukemia to help understand why children with Down syndrome have increased susceptibility to myeloproliferative disorder and leukemia. His approach involves utilizing human pluripotent stem cells as a novel disease model to study how an extra copy of chromosome 21 affects the differentiation and malignant transformation of blood progenitor cells. Genome instability, including the abnormal gain or loss of chromosomes, is a hallmark of cancer. The broad goal of Dr. Chen’s research is to elucidate how genome instability arises during blood cell development and its impacts on blood cancer development and resistance mechanisms to DNA-damaging chemotherapies.
