The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) has been a powerful voice for LLS for an amazing 32 years! Thanks to the continued generous commitment of the UFCW, over $77 million has been raised since 1983 to support blood cancer research. The UFCW and its 1.3 million U.S & Canadien members shine as an example of the kind of impact their solidarity with the LLS cause can make. In 2015 alone, the UFCW raised $1.9 million in the United States and over $2.5 million in Canada. The UFCW fundraising activity included successful charity golf tournaments, auctions, bottle drives, and sporting clay shooting events along with participation in LLS campaigns such as Light The Night, Team In Training and other activities. Of the $2.5 million raised in Canada, $1.7 million was raised through a bottle drive called "Returns for Leukemia." Among some of the other outstanding milestones is the effort of UFCW Local 328, representing workers in Rhode Island, southern Mass. and eastern Connecticut. The local reached the $1 million milestone recently through its annual golf tournament for LLS. In addition, UFCW Local 75, located in the Cincinnati/Dayton area, raised an incredible $110,000 with their charity golf tournament along with a Shoot for a Cure event and their participation in Light the Night. The majority of UFCW's members are primarily employed in the grocery industry. They also represent workers in nursing homes, retail clothing stores, poultry, meatpacking and food processing plants and in numerous other retail and food manufacturing areas.
In 2016, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and Walgreen Co. announced the launch of an innovative collaboration designed to further advance cancer therapies and address the changing treatment model facing patients with blood and other cancers. The collaboration builds on the heritage of Walgreens in serving its communities, and the 66-year history of LLS, which has invested more than $1 billion in research to advance blood cancer treatments and cures.
As new blood cancer therapies come to market and patients are able to manage their disease with oral medications at home, pharmacists are well-positioned on the front lines of patient care to help facilitate this treatment transition and play a significant role in providing access to these new therapies.
This Shared Value partnership will help patients, families and caregivers in three key ways:
- Provide educational tools and resources for enhanced patient support
- Implement a pharmacist education and training program to ensure pharmacists are knowledgeable about aspects of the cancer care continuum and can provide additional care
- Community engagement and corporate support for LLS's iconic Light The Night Walk national fundraising campaign
