When Virginia was diagnosed in 1997, patients with CML survived 3-5 years. A year after debilitating treatment, and her health worsening, Virginia was part of a phase I clinical trial for a new drug to treat CML. The drug, Gleevec, helps her live a normal life with her family and friends, and she is a CML survivor for 16 years and counting.
