CML is a type of cancer that begins in the bone marrow. Most people who have CML are adults. A small number of children have CML.
CML starts with a change (mutation) to a single marrow cell. The changed cell multiplies into many cells (CML cells). Blood cells that are almost the same as healthy blood cells are still made in the marrow. But without treatment the following changes take place:
- The number of red cells is usually less than normal
- The number of white cells is higher than normal and continues to grow.
