Company Has Raised $560,000 For LLS Since 2000, with $93,000 Raised in 2012 Alone
Washington D.C. - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society announced Washington Gas as the Top Corporate Fundraising team for the 2012 Light The Night Walks, which took place in October around the DC Metropolitan Area. One of the most tenured teams to participate in Light The Night, more than 100 Washington Gas employees took part in the 2012 event, raising $93,000. Through their efforts, the company eclipsed the half-million dollar mark, totaling $563,000 since their first walk in 2000.
"Washington Gas is proud to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk," said Doug Staebler, Vice President of Operations, Engineering and Marketing, and 2010-11 Light The Night Walk Chair. "We are thrilled to have taken Top Corporate Team honors for the 2012 event, and are looking forward to defending that honor in 2013. The opportunity for our employees to walk together and raise money and awareness for blood cancer is one that we look forward to each year."
Washington Gas first supported the Light The Night Walk in 2000, in memory of the company's President and CEO who lost his battle to leukemia earlier that year. Participation within the company has grown each year, and Staebler served as the event's Walk Chair in 2010 and 2011, engaging their corporate partners to join the Washington Gas team, or form their own. With top-level support, and involvement from all levels of the company, they have truly been able to make an impact in the lives of cancer patients.
"LLS is thankful to Washington Gas for their continued involvement and support of The Light The Night Walks and our mission," said Gabrielle Urquhart, National Capital Area Chapter Executive Director. "The money they have raised over the past13 years is ensuring a better life for our patients and their families, and helping us get closer to a cure."
The 2013 Light The Night Walks will take place on October 5 in Reston, VA, October 12 in Rockville, MD, and October 19 in Washington, DC. For more information on forming a team or volunteering at an event, visit www.lightthenight.org/nca or call (703) 399-2941.
