Join The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for the 18th Annual Leukemia Cup Regatta
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society National Capital Area Chapter is calling all local sailors and power boaters to join in the fight against blood cancers by participating in the Leukemia Cup fundraising events. The 2011 series includes the Junior Leukemia Cup Regatta, Power Boater Poker Run, and the signature event, The Leukemia Cup Regatta. The 2010 series raised more than $160,000 to support LLS's mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease and myeloma and improve the lives of patients and their families.
Sailors and power boaters are racing for the events' honorary skippers - Shannon Kelso and Hannah McNeal. Shannon was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma in September, 2010. She completed six rounds of chemotherapy at Georgetown University Hospital Center in January, 2011. The Arlington resident completed work on her Masters at George Mason University while undergoing treatment. Hannah McNeal was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in October of 2005. Then four years old, Hannah never complained about treatment and even looked forward to seeing the nurses. Hannah completed treatment in December, 2007 and has been cancer free ever since.
The Leukemia Cup Series includes events like:
