19 Candidates Set Out to Raise $1 Million in Ten Week
Alexandria, VA - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's National Capital Area Chapter will kick off its 20th anniversary Man & Woman of the Year campaign on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at District Nightclub. Candidates will compete in an exciting 10-week fundraising challenge to earn the title of 2011 Man and Woman of the Year.
The candidates have set a goal of raising $1 million overall for lifesaving cancer research, while also raising awareness for LLS's mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. This year?s fundraising is in honor of two special patient heroes, the 2011 Boy & Girl of the Year: Ryan Darby and Molly Farrell.
"With this outstanding selection of dynamic candidates and sponsors, we are sure that the 20th anniversary of this campaign will be one to remember" said Gabrielle Urquhart, Executive Director of the National Capital Area Chapter. "This group has an ambitious goal of raising $1 million in 10 weeks, but we are confident that they will succeed by motivating their networks to raise funds for our shared goal of helping our patients and their families. We thank the candidates for their passion for the cause, and for the contributions they will garner for the LLS mission."
The campaign begins on March 31 at District nightclub in Adams Morgan and ends at the black-tie Grand Finale Gala at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, DC on June 11. The man and woman who raise the most money are named the local Man and Woman of the Year at the June 11 event and go on to compete for the national titles. Since 2001, the National Capital Area has placed nine national winners.
The 2011 roster of candidates span the DC area geographically and professionally, but share one thing: a commitment to raise funds for blood cancer research and patient services.
