Event Hosted by Redskin Linebacker Brian Orakpo
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) announced The Leukemia Golf Classic Hosted by Brian Orakpo will take place on Monday, May 9, 2011 at the newly redesigned Trump National Golf Club. The event will be chaired by Troy Cromwell of Verizon Business while "Voice of the Washington Redskins" Larry Michael will serve as honorary chairman.
Founded in 2006 by then Redskin quarterback Mark Brunell, the golf classic has raised close to $885,000 for the National Capital Area Chapter of LLS, helping to fund its mission: to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Orakpo takes over as host of the event from former Redskin quarterback Jason Campbell, who served as host from 2008-2010.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to work with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and proud to follow in the footsteps of Mark Brunell and Jason Campbell in hosting such a terrific golf tournament for such an important cause," said Brian Orakpo.
The all-day event will begin with registration and a continental breakfast at 10:00 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. Redskin players old and new will take to the course and join together in the fight against blood cancer with fans and golfers from the DC region. Following 18 holes of golf, there will be a silent & live auction, dinner and awards ceremony, allowing participants the opportunity to bid on unique auction packages, with proceeds benefitting LLS.
Voice of the Redskins, Larry Michael, will serve as honorary chairman of the event, helping to increase awareness of the tournament and the National Capital Area of LLS which serves approximately 2,500 patients each year in Northern Virginia, Maryland and the District.
"I am proud to be working with Brian and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in support of such a worthy cause," said Michael.
Verizon Business executive Troy Cromwell enters his first year as chairman of the event ? helping to bring the business community together in support of blood cancer research.
"I'm honored to be partnering with Brian Orakpo and Larry Michael on The Leukemia Golf Classic," said Cromwell. "With leukemia causing more deaths of children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other cancer, we must do all we can to help advance the mission of LLS."
