Washington, D.C. - The National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is pleased to name Open Society Foundations as the 2013 Employer of the Year. The organization work to build vibrant and tolerant societies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people. LLS recognizes Open Society Foundations for going above and beyond the call of duty and improving the quality of life of blood cancer patients and caregivers.
Open Society Foundations was nominated for the award by an employee who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma five months after leaving his partner and family in Europe to take a position in the DC office. He was worried about losing his job without ever really starting and feared that distance from loved ones during the most critical time in his life would greatly impact his road to recovery. The employee noted, "my employer immediately said three things: that I should make treatment my priority; that they are committed to continue working with me; and that they will work with me to make sure that I have all the support I need."
Following the diagnosis, he received an incredible amount of support from colleagues who comforted him with nutritious, home-cooked meals and numerous visits to keep his spirits high. His managers went a step further to bring the employee's partner, who also works for the organization in Brussels, to work temporarily out of the DC office.
Open Society Foundations is most deserving of the prestigious Employer of the Year title and will be presented with an honorary plaque on Wednesday, March 13 at 12:15 p.m. at their office. In addition, the company will also receive recognition at LLS campaign events and tickets to an LLS sponsored event. Booz Allen Hamilton and The White House Executive Clerk's Office are also recognized as honorable mentions.
