Annual Event Has Raised More Than $7 Million Since Its Inception in 1988
Alexandria, VA - The Bobby Mitchell Autotrader.com Hall of Fame Golf Classic will celebrate 21 years of success this July when 45 Hall of Famers descend on Lansdowne Resort for a weekend of golf. 2011 Hall of Fame inductees Chris Hanburger and Richard Dent will join tournament mainstays Darrell Green, Anthony Munoz and Sonny Jurgensen, for the 21st Anniversary event.
"Bobby and his wife Gwen have created something truly special in this Golf Classic," said Gabrielle Urquhart, Executive Director of the LLS National Capital Area Chapter. "Together with co-chairs Tammy Darvish and Todd Heavner and their fantastic committee, they work behind the scenes to ensure the success of this weekend. Over the years they have helped to change the lives of thousands of people affected by blood cancer, and we are so thankful for their dedication to LLS."
The tournament will honor patient heroes Taylor Law and Alex Nieves, two of the many people affected by blood cancers. Taylor, an 11-year-old girl from Olney, MD, was diagnosed with leukemia in September of 2008. After two and a half years of chemotherapy, Taylor is now cancer free and will enter middle school this fall, where she hopes to become a member of the dance team. Alex was more recently diagnosed with leukemia and is currently undergoing treatment. The 20-year-old lacrosse player from Centreville, VA is enrolled at Salisbury University and is eager to return to school and his teammates.
The weekend will include a media and sponsor breakfast on Friday, a banquet and awards dinner on Saturday evening, and a tournament round on Sunday. This year?s raffle winner will be drawn at Saturday?s banquet, though the winner does not need to be present. The prize is $25,000 towards the purchase of a new car at a participating WANADA dealer. Tickets may be purchased for $50 and only 2,500 are available for purchase.
The main event - Sunday's Golf Classic - is open to the public. Fans may participate in the gallery and see their favorite sports heroes tee off throughout the morning. Gallery tickets are available for $5 at Lansdowne the day of the event. Both children and adults will have the opportunity to participate in a putting contest for great prizes.
Created in 1988, the Bobby Mitchell Hall of Fame Golf Classic has raised more than $7 million for the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS): to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
