Volunteer Coordinator Internship

How many people can answer the question, "What do you do for a living?" with the answer, "I help find cures for cancer."  At LLS, employees take our mission seriously.  Whether you work in one of our chapters, are an accountant at the national office or a specialist in our Information Resource Center, you work each day on making our mission a reality:  Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Position Title: Volunteer Coordinator Internship
Location: Central Pennsylvania Chapter -  Harrisburg, PA


Volunteer Recruitment and Training

  • Identify, recruit, and screen volunteers and interview applicants for chapter needs such as administrative, special projects, and events
  • Provide new volunteers with training and orientation
  • Recruit new volunteers through community outreach and free opportunities

Planning and Implementation

  • Assist in coordination of a volunteer recognition event (Winter or Summer)
  • Update LLS website and Facebook page, detailing volunteer activities and recognizing new volunteers

Volunteer Management and Tracking

  • Work with LLS staff to manage volunteers
  • Establish and regularly update volunteer schedule and list of events
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers through check-in phone calls, e-mails, and personal appreciations for their efforts
  • Document and log volunteer hours in volunteer tracking system and report hours to LLS staff
  • Maintain the volunteer database and calendar
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers and act as a single point of contact

Other Duties:

  • Attend one Light The Night Walk (Fall) or Man & Woman of the Year Kickoff or Finale (Spring)
  • Attend one School & Youth assembly and one third-party event
  • Must attend staff meeting (second Tuesday of every month at 10:00 a.m.
  • Coordinate staff volunteer project
  • Must complete all OnBoarding requirements of staff


  • Minimum of 20 hours per week
  • Dedication to volunteerism and coordinating volunteer activities
  • Experience in leadership role
  • Experience recruiting, training, managing, and supporting groups of people
  • Ability to build relationships and work with volunteers and LLS staff
  • Ability to work well independently and on a team
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and think strategically
  • Proficient in business English, spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Professional maturity and judgment required

This internship is unpaid - potential for class credit is available pending school approval.
