The Arizona Myeloma Network/Pat and Bill Hite Cancer Caregivers' Program is a free half day seminar designed to provide caregivers of cancer patients with practical knowledge, skills and strategies necessary for effectively caring for their loved ones as well as themselves. Seminar material is adapted from the Rosalynn Carter Institue for Caregiving's 'Caring for You, Caring for Me' program, and are customized specifically for caregivers of cancer patients.
Caregivers have repeatedly requested a support program. Thrust into their role unexpectedly, they are seldom adequately equipped to cope with the demands of tending to someone with a serious illness. Their suffering, often hidden, is reflected in high rates of depression and substance/alcohol abuse, poor eating and exercise habits, chronic health conditions, and high risk of mortality. Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI) states that "family caregivers are at risk for a wide range of problems in the areas of physical and mental health, finances, employment, and retirement."
